Many creators on YouTube, TikTok, Instagram and other social media are being paid to promote products or services. Many a time they do not openly indicate that this is the case, which is illegal in many countries.

It is also very annoying for audiences if minutes of their time is wasted by talking about products or services that are unrelated to the topic. The information given is often considered dishonest due to being paid for, and audiences generally prefer to skip over such content. It makes viewers less likely to subscribe or tap a like button.

Paid promotions reduce creator reliability by having them make false statements or exaggerated claims about a product they do not even use themselves.
